CBD Tinctures: What They Are, How to Use Them, and What to Look For
Posted by Emerald Medicine Company on Apr 1st 2026
If you've walked into a hemp shop lately, you've probably seen rows of small bottles with droppers labeled "tincture." Maybe you've wondered what makes a tincture different from a CBD capsule or a gummy — and whether one form is better than another.
Good questions. Let's break it down.
What Exactly Is a CBD Tincture?
A CBD tincture is a liquid hemp extract designed to be taken by mouth, usually with a dropper built into the cap. Most tinctures combine a hemp extract (full spectrum, broad spectrum, or isolate) with a carrier oil — things like MCT oil, hemp seed oil, or olive oil — to help your body absorb the cannabinoids.
Tincture vs. oil: You'll hear these terms used interchangeably, and honestly, they mostly are. Technically, a traditional tincture uses an alcohol base, while a "CBD oil" uses a fat-based carrier. In practice at most hemp shops, both get called tinctures. What matters is what's actually in the bottle.
Tincture vs. capsule: Capsules give you a pre-measured dose in a familiar format. Tinctures give you more flexibility — you can adjust your amount drop by drop, and they tend to absorb faster since the liquid goes under your tongue rather than through your digestive system.
How to Use a CBD Tincture
The most common method is sublingual — Latin for "under the tongue." Here's how it works:
Use the dropper to draw up your desired amount.
Squeeze the oil under your tongue.
Hold it there for 60–90 seconds. This gives the cannabinoids time to absorb through the tissues under your tongue before you swallow whatever's left.
Swallow the remainder. It'll still do its thing through your digestive system — it just takes longer to kick in that way.
Onset time: Sublingual absorption typically starts within 15–30 minutes. If you swallow it outright (like in a capsule), you're looking at 45–90 minutes.
Dosing basics: If you're new to CBD tinctures, start low. A common beginner dose is 10–15mg of CBD. Give it a few days at that level before adjusting. Everyone's endocannabinoid system is different, and more isn't always better.
What to Look For in a CBD Tincture
Not all tinctures are created equal. Here's what matters when you're comparing options:
Full Spectrum vs. Isolate
Full spectrum tinctures contain the full range of cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids from the hemp plant — including trace amounts of THC (under the federal 0.3% limit). Isolate-based tinctures contain only CBD, with all other compounds removed.
There's no universally "better" option. Full spectrum is popular with people who want the full plant profile, while isolate appeals to those who want zero THC. We'll dig into this more in our guide to full spectrum vs. broad spectrum vs. isolate.
Carrier Oil
Most tinctures use MCT (medium-chain triglyceride) oil, often derived from coconut. It's tasteless, absorbs well, and has a long shelf life. Some brands use hemp seed oil or olive oil. None of these are inherently superior — it comes down to personal preference and any dietary considerations.
Milligram Strength
This tells you the total CBD content in the bottle, not per drop. A 1,000mg tincture in a 30ml bottle means roughly 33mg per full dropper. Know your per-serving amount so you can dose consistently.
Third-Party Lab Testing
This is non-negotiable. Any reputable CBD tincture should come with a Certificate of Analysis (COA) from an independent lab. The COA verifies:
- The actual CBD and THC content matches the label
- The product is free of heavy metals, pesticides, and residual solvents
- It's within legal limits
At Emerald Medicine Company, every product on our shelves is lab-tested before it ever reaches you. We believe that transparency isn't a feature — it's the baseline. If a brand can't show you a COA, walk away.
